In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users, and these visitors can be converted into customers. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

Directory and search engines

Before the search engine has arrived people generally searched their queries in the directory sites. As nowadays search engine has arrived with a lot of features and other additional services people hardly go after the directory. Another cause it is mandatory submit to every page manually in the directory; where the search engine does it automatically as per the direction provided by the robots.txt file and the sitemap. Then when anybody search about that topic, search engine shows the best relevant pages in the result page.
